Loan Library Policies
Mission and Purpose: Loan libraries are an important component of a comprehensive assistive technology service delivery system. Loan libraries have historically been developed to provide an opportunity for potential users of assistive technology to explore the potential and usefulness of various enabling technologies. The WKATC loan library will serve a variety of purposes
It will be used as a short-term opportunity (30 to 60 days) for consumers and providers to use and test specific devices and equipment to determine their potential benefit.
It will be used to assist consumers and providers in the selection and choice process to which every potential user is entitled. Exploring appropriate alternatives is an important process for both consumers and providers.
It will be used to provide a “trial period” for equipment/device usage to avoid the prevalent problem of equipment abandonment.
Guidelines for Use by Consumers and Agencies: For a loan library systems to be successful, it is important to operate with clear guidelines for consumers and providers. The following guidelines have been developed for that purpose:
All equipment and devices will be loaned for a 30 day period of time (unless other prior approval has been given). Loans may be renewed if no one else is on the waiting list for the item. A renewal fee, equal to the original fee will be charged for each 30 days of usage.
A signed contract will be required for equipment/device usage. This contract will require specific identifying information from the user and will be binding.
There will be a required fee for use of items in the loan library based on the purchase price of the equipment. That fee may be waived at the discretion of the WKATC staff.
All users of the loan library must complete an orientation/training on the use of specific equipment being borrowed. This orientation will be required of the user, the family/caregiver/guardian and/or the agency staff as appropriate.
A waiting list will be maintained on each item in the loan library to determine the level of need for the specific item and to determine whether loans may be renewed.
A maximum of five items may be borrowed for one person at one time.
